EU commits to World Water Day in Georgia

Water Water Day is celebrated to spread awareness of water, its importance in our daily life, how one can save water and to drink clean water for healthy life. The European Union Water Initiative plus for the Eastern Partnership (EUWI+) commits to World Water Day in Georgia where the World Water Day is celebrated with various activities closely linked to the EU Water Framework Directive and sustainable development principles.

As part of public consultation for Khrami-Debed River Basin management plan the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, together with the EUWI+, organises a basin stakeholder consultation meeting with experts and interested parties (21 March, 2019, Bolnisi).

In preparation of the World Water Day, an information campaign was launched to raise students and schoolchildren’s awareness of water quality, sustainable development goals and principle "Do not miss anybody”. The campaign will end with Open Space World Water Day for schoolchildren in Bolnisi, Khrami-Debed River Basin.

In the framework of the Open Space WWD, young people will get acquainted with the latest finding on the quality of water in Khrami and Debed Revers and will be able to analyze samples of the quality of river and waste water themselves using express water tests. The interactive sessions on riverine plastic wasteand their impact on water ecosystems and aquatic life will allow youth to affect water quality by the choices done in their daily lives.

Background information: Launched in September 2016 for a duration of four years, the EUWI+ project is the biggest commitment of the EU to the water sector in the EaP countries. It supports the six partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) to align their legislation with EU policy on water management, with a focus on transboundary rivers. It provides support to the development of a long-term vision of water sector reforms in the Partner Countries. The project is implemented by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and an EU Consortium comprising the Austrian Environment Agency (Austria) and the International Office for Water (France). The EUWI+ contributes to implementing the EU - Georgia Association Agreement.
