REC Caucasus invites to celebrate the World Day to Combat Desertification

"Our land. Our home. Out future", is the rallying call for 2017 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD), observed every year on June 17. WDCD highlights the important link between migration and land degradation by drawing global attention to the central role productive land can play in turning unproductive and abandoned spaces into places that are stable, secure and sustainable in the future.

According to the International Migration Report (2015), the number of international migrants worldwide has continued to increase over the years - reaching 244 million in 2015, up from 222 million in 2010 and 173 million in 2002.

Investing in the land is one of the methods to increase employment for the local communities and strengthen security and prospects for sustainability. More than 100 of the 169 countries affected by desertification are setting national targets to curb land degradation by 2030.

The global observance of the 2017 WDCD will be scheduled in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on 15 June, hosted by le Ministère de l'Environnement, de l'Economie Verte et du Changement Climatique (MEEVCC).
