Within the frames of the project "Landscape and Sustainable Land Management for Mitigating Land Degradation and Contributing to Poverty Reduction in Rural Areas (SLMRA)", on March 24, Regional Environmental Centre for Caucasus (RECC) organized workshop on Development of Windbreaks management policy framework in Georgia.
Project is implemented by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), funded by The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and executed by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia with Regional Environmental Centre for Caucasus (RECC).
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia - Mr. Gigla Agulashvili and his Deputy - Ms. Ekaterine Grigalava, the Head of the Land Resources and Mining department of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection - Ms. Nino Chikovani, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Georgia - Mr. Giorgi Chkheidze, Deputy Heads of Agrarian and Environment Committee of Parliament of Georgia - Mr. Gela Samkharauli, Mr. Irakli Shiolashvili and Mr. Zaza Khutsishvili, the National Agency for State Property representative - Ms. Eka Todadze, the the Governor of Kakheti Region - Mr. Irakli Kadagishvili, the Head of Dedoplistskaro Municipality - Mr. Nikoloz Janiashvili, the Director of The Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (RECC) - Ms. Sophiko Akhobadze, also the Heads of Signagi and Gardabani Municipalities, representatives of Civil Society organizations and local farmers.
The attendees of the meeting visited planted Windbreaks on Shiraki Valley territory and highlighted the importance of Windbreaks, its role and necessity, also noting the significance of the green paper “windbreaks management framework – main challenges and bottlenecks” and white policy paper “windbreaks management policy framework” development by end of June.
The participants of the meeting fully comprehended planned actions to accomplish to achieve the goal. The local farmers also took part in discussion and talked about existing problems.
