A. SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT
Background
Sustainable land management contributes to community and ecosystem resilience while improving the socio-economic human condition. The sustainable management of natural resources, like forests, pastures, agricultural land and water bodies are of vital importance for improving rural livelihoods, conserving biodiversity and providing ecosystem services. But the path to sustainable land management requires not only an adequate political and legal framework, but also a comprehensive set of sound and long-lasting management approaches for engagement of local communities. Public support is a key component of any strategy to avoid land degradation. Governmental support and comprehensive incentive schemes are essential to avoid management practices which lead to degradation and destruction of the natural resource base.
Mass media can shape public opinion and hold politicians to account. It is, therefore, of most importance to turn the selected environmental journalists into well informed persons on the risks and opportunities of land erosion/degradation. Targeted media workshops with field trips to affected regions, showcasing the best practices of sustainable land management, will help to raise public awareness and call for immediate political actions.
Expected impact: Media coverage concerning environmental, biodiversity and sustainable development topics will increase.
General Objective: The general objective of the workshop is to create a pool of well informed and motivated journalists, which are able to write and report in a scientific sound and attractive manner about land erosion/degradation and environmental challenges in the countries of the South Caucasus.
