Celebrate #2019WDCD #Georgia

On the occasion to celebrate the World Day to Combat Desertification in 2019, Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, together with REC Caucasus and Environmental Information and Education Centre (EIEC) has organized GEF project site visit information campaign in Gardabani Municipality to present the results achieved towards land degradation neutrality in support of ecosystem functions and services and enhance food security. Georgia sets a target to restore 20 000 ha of degraded land by 2020 as part of its commitment to meet land degradation neutrality goal. The anniversary campaign this year runs under the slogan “Let’s grow the future together,” with the 25th anniversary of the Convention.

“LDN represents a paradigm shift in land management policies and practices, it is a unique approach that counterbalances the expected loss of productive land with the recovery of degraded areas” noted in her opening statement Ms. Nino Tandilashvili, Deputy Minister of the Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

In preparation of the World Day to Combat Desertification, an information campaign was also launched to raise students’ and schoolchildren’s awareness on sustainable land management and land degradation neutrality. The campaign ended with Open Space World Day to Combat Desertification for schoolchildren and Student Essay Completion Award Ceremony in Sartichala, Gardabani municipality. This year, the student essay competition focuses on land management and land degradation neutrality concept. The prompt completion jury encouraged students to answer the questions, “To you, what does it mean to combat desertification? And, what can you and/or others do now to make a meaningful impact to stop desertification process in your community / in your country?” These essays can also be used on the students’ college applications, resumes, and more. The top 3 students and their teachers were awarded prizes by deputy minister Ms. Tandilahsvili.

The event was arranged within the GEF funded projects, implemented by UN Environment.
