Kakheti, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti landfill will be arranged according to European Standards

Up to 55 decision makers from Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regions gathered to  present the results of the feasibility study reports for Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) in above-mentioned regions. The meeting was organized in Tbilisi, at the Hotel ROOMS, on May 17, 2017, in the frames of the project: “Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme in Selected Regions in Georgia (Kakheti and Samegelo-Zemo Svaneti)”.

The project is financially supported by the German Development Bank (KfW) and implemented jointly in partnership with Solid Waste Management of Georgia (SWMCG). German consulting Infrastruktur & Umwelt (IU),Sehlhoff GmbH, REC Caucasus and PMCG were instructed to provide consulting services for the development of technical-economical assessment of the project.

The aim of the project is to improve the waste management condition in the country and give special considerations to the implementation of international standards for waste disposal as well as important steps towards resource recovery and waste valorisation.

The meeting was attended by the First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure – Mr. Irakli Matkava, the Director of Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG) – Mr. Giorgi Shukhoshvili, the Governor of Kakheti Region – Mr. Irakli Kadagishvili, the Governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Region – Mr. Levan Shonia, the Heads of the mentioned region Municipalities, representatives of German Development Bank (KfW), international and non-governmental organizations.

During the meeting, the attendees discussed technical, infrastructural and financial events of waste management system in the project area and presented the analyses of the project costs, financial system as well as expected environmental and social risks and benefits. The governors of both regions and heads of its municipalities supported the proposed approach and committed to contribute to the success of introduction and implementation of Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) in Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regions.
