Policy Gaps and development of common vision on Windbreaks Rehabilitation and Maintenance in Georgia

On December 22, the Regional Environmental Centre for Caucasus (RECC) organized the working meeting – “Policy Gaps and development of common vision on Windbreaks Rehabilitation and Maintenance in Georgia”.

High level Decision Makers of the Environmental and Agricultural sectors reviewed the draft Law on windbreaks and discussed the future steps for enforcement the adoption of the law by the Parliament of Georgia.

About 30 participants were attended the meeting: the representatives of relevant ministries, Committees of the Georgian Parliament, public, international, non-governmental, local municipalities and academic sectors. The stakeholders, including Non-governmental, as well as International Organizations shared their challenges and views related to the legislative initiatives in the framework of the meeting.

The meeting was organized in the frames of project – “Applying Landscape and Sustainable Land Management (L-SLM) for mitigating land degradation and contributing to poverty reduction in rural areas”, executing by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection through REC C. The project is financed by GEF and implementing by UNEP.

Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia and the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia agreed to develop the Policy Paper on Windbreaks rehabilitation and maintenance with support of REC C together with partner organization GIZ. The meeting participants also agreed that REC C will distribute the draft Law on windbreaks to the stakeholders and facilitate provision of comments and recommendations.

The project will continue cooperation with all stakeholders regarding the above issue, due to support the development and applying of legislation and relevant regulations related to rehabilitation and maintenance of windbreaks.
