Within the frames of the project – “Applying Landscape and Sustainable Land Management (L-SLM) for mitigating land degradation and contributing to poverty reduction in rural areas”, Regional Environmental Centre for Caucasus (REC Caucasus) is planning to implement pilot project desalinization of Agricultural land in East part of Georgia, particularly in Sighnaghi Municipality.
The aim of the project is to increase land productivity and fertility by desalinization of chosen land areas.
At this stage, an ongoing process is the assessment of saline soils’ current state in selected area (e.g. physical – geographical peculiarities of the area, soil type, structure and properties, salinity problem and its causes) on the bases of available data, expert interviews and field visits; and development of soil rehabilitation/desalination measures, preferably biological measures for the pilot areas, including cost calculation of the activities related costs and time line.
The project is financed by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
