Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (RECC) in partnership with Michael Succow Foundation and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources protection of Georgia, within the frames of UNESCO programme – Man and Biosphere, implements one-year preparatory project “Biosphere reserves as model regions for climate change mitigation and adaptation – capacity development for the establishment of biosphere reserve in Kakheti”. The project will continue until November 30, 2017 and it aims to create regional development strategy in Kakheti region target municipalities that will help establish UNESCO recognized biosphere reserves in the region.
In May 2017, in Dedoplistskharo, Akhmeta and Telavi Municipalities local working groups were formed, which consists of stakeholders from governmental as well as non-governmental and private sectors. The aim of working groups is to establish existing problems and issues within the municipality in addition to developing necessary strategy for solving them in terms of environment, education, tourism and cultural heritage. Conducted works by working groups will be prerequisite for creating zoning system in target region provided by the biosphere reserve concept.
The representatives of REC Caucasus and Michael Succow Foundation in cooperation with working groups work on developing an action plan for solving existing problems in Kakheti region.
