The Director of REC Caucasus – Sophiko Akhobadze Attends The First Global Land Degradation Neutrality Forum

On July 4, the Director of the Regional Environmental Centre of the Caucasus (RECC) – Ms. Sophiko Akhobadze participated in Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) high level forum, which was organized by the UNCCD and hosted by the government of the Republic of South Korea.

Ms. Akhobadze under the panel “Promoting peace and security through LDN implementation” shared RECC’s positive experiences in facilitating conflict resolution by improving transboundary cooperation in achieving Land Degradation Neutrality targets to maximize multiple benefits in post conflict situation. Ms. Akhobadze paid special attention to the fact that the conflict in South Caucasus has greatly accelerated the processes of environmental degradation that have been undermining subsistence livelihoods in the area over recent decades and the local communities from the conflict affected areas are especially suffering from the impact of land degradation.

According to Ms. Akhobadze, “RECC’s Land Degradation Neutrality program, promoting regional approaches for implementation of 2030 agenda and SDGs in South Caucasus are essential elements for peaceful cooperation in our region”. The outcomes of the forum will be delivered to other global fora to forge decision making on the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and LDN implementation.
