On June 16-18, the Caucasus Regional Environmental Center (RECC) hosted representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan as part of a knowledge exchange study tour.
The study tour focused on sustainable land and pasture management and served as a platform for sharing knowledge and practical experience between countries. It included discussions on national reforms, existing challenges, and innovative solutions to combat land degradation. The visit strengthened cross-country cooperation and facilitated the exchange of information on policies and programs that improve soil health, promote sustainable land use, and enhance environmental resilience.
As part of the tour, meetings were held with representatives from the Department of Melioration and Land Management of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring.
The guests also visited the village of Ganakhleba in Dmanisi Municipality, where restoration efforts are ongoing across 268 hectares of pastureland. These include the introduction of a controlled grazing system and the development of supporting infrastructure to enable sustainable grazing. Members of the Ganakhleba Pasture Users’ Association shared their successful experiences in tackling pasture degradation.
The study tour was organized within the framework of the project “Achieving Land Degradation Neutrality Targets of Georgia through Restoration and Sustainable Management of Degraded Pastures.” The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Regional Environmental Center for the Caucasus (RECC).
