World Day to Combat Desertification, 2017 Georgia

World Day to Combat Desertification, 2017 was celebrated in Georgia by focusing on most important point of Land Degradation Neutrality issue. This year’s slogan was “Our land. Our home. Our Future”. This year’s celebrations saw a whole host of activities in Dedophlistkaro to draw attention to the central role productive land can play in turning unproductive and abandoned spaces into places that are stable, secure and sustainable, into the future.

As part of action against Desertification, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia together with the representatives of Kakheti and Shida Kartli Municipalities, the Ministries of Agriculture and Regional Development and Infrastructure, local farmers and SCOs organized joint tree planting in degraded windbreaks area.

The World Day to Combat Desertification is a unique occasion to remind everybody that desertification can be effectively tackled, that solutions are possible, and that key tools to this aim lay in strengthened community participation and co-operation at all levels.

The abovementioned event was organized with the support of Regional Environmental for the Caucasus (RECC) in the frame of Global Environment Facility (GEF) project “Applying Landscape and Sustainable Land Management (L-SLM) for mitigating land degradation and contributing to poverty reduction in rural areas” implemented by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
